The main campus of National Louis University (NLU), a private nonprofit institution, is located in Chicago, Illinois. Over sixty programs are accessible to undergraduate and graduate students at NLU, spread between its four colleges.
It serves students from 13 counties in the central part of Florida at its regional school in Tampa, Florida, along with its places around the Chicago metropolitan area.
Ever since its founding in 1886, NLU has had an important effect on the field of education. Its founders pushed for the importance of academic and professional training in early childhood education theory and practice, while also working to creating the National Kindergarten Movement and the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA).
For applied research efforts in urban development, children development, school improvement, and teacher training, NLU has been granted about $65 million in funding.
76 alumni from the National College of Education have been given honorary recognition by the Golden Apple Foundations of Chicago and Rockford. the alumni served in the Illinois state government and have received many James Beard awards.
Elizabeth Harrison founded National Louis University (NLU) in 1886 intending to prepare young female teachers known as “Kindergarteners,” who spearheaded the early childhood education movement. The requirements of the school created the standard for education colleges across the country.
Harrison described “how to teach the child from the beginning of his existence that all things are connected how to lead him to this vital truth from his observation” in her book The Kindergarten as an Influence in Modern Civilization, which was published by the university in 1893.
The university’s name was eventually changed to the Chicago Kindergarten Training School (1887), Chicago Kindergarten College (1893), the National Kindergarten and Elementary College (1912), and finally the National College of Education (1930) as it grew and expanded over time. The institution acquired the name “National” after it was approved as the National Kindergarten Association’s professional school.
The university was one of the first teachers’ colleges in the whole country to offer a four-year program leading to a bachelor of education degree, and it actively pushed the idea of kindergarten and early education teaching in America.x`
